What's Wrong With Me?

I'm gonna stop you right there...the answer is nothing. And I don't need to have a session with you first to determine that answer. To say something is wrong with you, insinuates you're flawed or broken. It's in the phrase...WRONG! As in incorrect or not right.

It doesn't matter if you have a formal diagnosis straight out of the DSM V and take psychotropic medication. Perhaps you have a personality disorder or mood disorder...still normal! Your brain and mind functions a certain way and you adjust accordingly. Just because everyone doesn't have it, doesn't mean there's something wrong with you.

Perhaps you have PTSD or complex trauma and have been in therapy for a while..still normal! Trauma response is a real thing. Plus there are numerous factors involved with processing and healing. It may take you 3 months, 3 years or 30 years to get to your version of healing.

Society for the most part, rates your level of "normal" by what I call the comfort scale; The level of comfort people have in engaging with you determines how "normal" you are. Its way easier to say "there's something wrong with him" or "she's still has all these issues from her past, she should be fine by now" verses

"I get uncomfortable when it comes to dealing with other peoples emotions", "I don't know a lot about mental health diagnosis', so it makes me nervous"... the examples can go on.

I'm sure I'm not the only therapist to have clients ask or allude to the question "what's wrong with me?". My answer always begins with 'there's nothing wrong with you'... then I remind them that they are a human being with specific life experiences that can cause the symptoms they are feeling. If its someone new to therapy asking....same initial response; 'there's nothing wrong with you, now lets talk about what you're experiencing'.

No one should walk around feeling like something is wrong with them. This can lead to feeling isolated, nurture anxiousness or lead to depression.

No matter what you went through, going through or diagnosed with....YOU are not defined by the symptoms you're experiencing.
